Channing Tatum has been met with a wave of fury from fans after revealing the extreme lengths he went to just to avoid putting a wash on.
The actor first stepped into the spotlight as a model in the early 2000s, before becoming a household name thanks to roles in She’s the Man, Magic Mike and Step Up.
Reflecting on those early days in a new interview, the 44-year-old has admitted that he actually just splashed the cash on new T-shirts because he ‘hates doing laundry’.
That must have cost him an absolute fortune!
Appearing in GQ’s series, ‘10 Things Channing Tatum Can’t Live Without’, he shared his love for a ‘classic’ white Hanes T-shirt, and ended up with a cupboard full of them years ago.
‘I hate doing laundry,’ he laughed. ‘I hate it more than I can possibly say. I had one year that I called “the year of the fresh white tee”.
‘I don’t think I did laundry all year that year. I just wore white T-shirts that I just bought. I’d be like, “I can get two wears out of this a week. This is going to be good.” The year of the fresh white tee. 1999 or 2000. It’s a beautiful year.’
Although we can relate to hating chores, buying tops just to wear them for a couple of days may be a step too far…
However, Channing shared that it’s a completely different story when it comes to his bottoms, as he’s had the same pair of Dickies trousers since he was a teenager.
‘Pants generally are essentials in life,’ the dad-of-one added. ‘I have a pair of Dickies that I’ve had since I was probably 18 years old. I was framing houses in these things and now they’re my comfort clothes.
‘They don’t fit very well anymore, my butt has gotten bigger. But I’ll get back down to that weight.’
Unfortunately for Channing, his laundry confession didn’t go down too well with fans who flocked to social media and slammed him for being ‘out of touch’ and ‘wasteful’.
Unpacking the remarks on Reddit, Comfortable-Load-904 fumed: ‘Sometimes celebrities tell us these stories without realizing how out of touch they sound.
‘Channing you are a very rich man but that is very wasteful and you could have just hired a housekeeper to do your laundry.’
Knickstapeeee agreed: ‘They think they’re being relatable and it just comes off as super out of touch with reality.’
‘That is so wasteful and lazy. Yet we average folk are expected to use paper straws. The laws don’t exist for the rich,’ EmotionalHouseCat said.
Jonsnowme slated: ‘Man they really need to just think before they admit this s**t. By they I mean rich people. F**king wasteful and appalling.’
Electronic_Stop_9493 jumped to Channing’s defense, adding: ‘Honestly I appreciate the honesty. So refreshing vs celebrities that act perfect or eco conscious on their private jets.’
As London-Me joked: ‘I did once give up on scrubbing a saucepan and just shove it in the bin. This is the closest I’ll get to an A lister lifestyle.’
A simple white tee might be Channing’s go-to but he has never been one to shy away from fashion, and started working with Versace just last month.
In fact, he is now the face of Versace Eros – the fashion house’s luxury fragrance – and switched his beloved white top look for a black vest for the photoshoot.
‘When I started modeling in the 2000s, Versace was the brand I always wanted to work with but never did, so this campaign feels extra special and personal to me,’ he said of the opportunity via CR Fashion Book.
‘The Versace name has such a strong meaning to so many around the world, and to be a part of that legacy is a real privilege. Donatella is a true icon and friend, and I am so excited to see the reaction to what we’ve created together.’
‘I loved working with Channing for this shoot. Not only does he look amazing, he also put his heart into this campaign,’ Donatella Versace added. ‘He shows strength and power and is also one of the kindest and most charming men I have met.
‘He defines modern masculinity. The perfect Versace man. There is no one better to embody Eros!’
